ASTM A588
A588 steel plate refers to a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel plate that conforms to the ASTM A588 specification. ASTM A588 is a standard specification for weathering steel, which is a type of steel that exhibits enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance.
A588 steel plate is primarily used in outdoor applications where exposure to the elements and atmospheric conditions may cause corrosion. It is commonly used in construction, bridges, buildings, towers, and other structural applications.
A588’s ability to resist corrosion is a result of elements such as copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. The addition of these alloying elements creates a protective oxide layer, known as patina, which helps to inhibit further corrosion.
Mechanical Properties A588:
• Tensile: 70 ksi min (4” and under), 67 ksi min (4”-5”) 63 ksi min (over 5”-8”)
• Yield: 50 ksi min (4” and under), 46 ksi min (4”-5”) 42 ksi min (over 5”-8”)
• Elongation: 16% min in 8” 19% min in 2” (for plates wider than 24”)

• Tensile: 70 ksi min (3/4 and under), 67 ksi min (3/4-1.5) 63 ksi min (over 1.5-4)
• Yield: 50 ksi min (3/4 and under), 46 ksi min (3/4-1.5) 42 ksi min (over 1.5-4)
